Question:

Define cell theory.

Answer:

Modern cell theory states that -:

❒ Bodies of all living organisms are made up of cells and their products.

❒ Cells are units of structure in the body of living organisms.

❒ Each cell is made up of small mass of protoplasm having nucleus, a number of organelles and a covering memberane.

❒ While a cell can survive independently ,the cell organelles cannot do so.

❒ Cell belonging to different organisms and different regions are fundamentally similar in their structure, chemical composition and metabolism.

❒ Life exists only in cells because all activities of life are performed by cells.

❒ Cells get modified depending upon specific requirements.( Eg. elongated muscles and nerve cells.)

❒ Cells show homestatis.(maintainance of constant internal environment.)

❒ Genetic information is stored and expressed inside cell.

❒ Life passes from one generation to next generation in the form of cells.

❒ Growth of an organism involves growth and multiplication of cells.

Additional Information:

  • Cell is the fundamental structural and functional unit of life.
  • In 1665, Robert Hooke firstly saw and studied the structure of cell but that was dead cell.
  • Anoton Van Leeuwenhoek firstly saw and discovered a live cell.
  • Robert Brown discovered the nucleus in the cells of orchid root.
  • Dujardin discovered the living semi-fluid substance of cells which was named sarcode.
  • Purkinje renamed sarcode as protoplast.
  • Schlieden and Schwann together formulated cell theory.
  • Rudolf Virchow ( 1855 ) first explained that cells divided into new cells are formed from pre existing cells. ( Omnis cellula-e-cellula )
