Use of these substances over long periods of time can destroy the soil structure by killing the soil micro-organisms that recycle the nutrients in the soil. It also kills the Earthworms which are instrumental in making the rich humus. So, Green Manure, Vermi-composting etc. should be used in place of chemicals. It will not only enhancing the nutrient quality of the soil but also enrich humus content in it which ultimately improve the water holding capacity of the soil also.
