Modes of Reproduction :-

There are two modes of Reproduction in animals.

  • Sexual reproduction
  • Asexual reproduction

Sexual reproduction:- The production of a new animal by the existing two parents, by the fusion of their gametes, is called sexual reproduction. It involves the fusion of a male with a female gamete which leads to the formation of zygote that develops into a new individual. Fishes, frogs, cows, dogs, horses, human beings etc. They all reproduce by the sexual reproduction.

Asexual reproduction:- The production of new animals by a single parent without the involvement of gametes is called asexual reproduction. Since fusion of gametes is not involved, zygotes are not formed in asexual reproduction. The young ones produced are the exact copy of their parents. Amoeba, hydra, yeast etc. They all reproduce by asexual reproduction.

More to know:-

Fertilisation:- The fusion of a male gamete (sperm) with the female gamete (ovum) to form a zygote during sexual reproduction is called fertilisation.

Fertilisation is of 2 types:-

  • External reproduction
  • Internal reproduction

External reproduction:- The fertilisation which occurs outside the female's body is called external fertilisation. In amphibians (frogs, toads) and fishes external fertilisation takes place. During spring and rainy season, frogs and toads move to ponds or slow-flowing streams. The female lays hundred of delicate eggs. A layer of jelly hold the eggs together and provide protection to the eggs. As the eggs are laid, the male releases a large number of sperms. Each sperm swims randomly in water with the help of its long tail. The sperms come on contact with the eggs and this results in fertilisation.

Internal fertilisation:- The fertilisation which occurs inside the female's body is called internal fertilisation. In internal fertilisation, the eggs are fertilised by sperms inside the female's body to form zygote. In the process, the male animal releases its sperms into the female's body. These sperms move to the egg and fertilise it. Internal fertilisation takes place in animals like mammals (human beings), birds, reptiles and insects.
