They are called pneumetaphores.

These mangrove plants grow in waterlogged soil.thus there is no air.these roots grow upwards to breath.they are also called respiratory roots.

Modified adventitious roots are referred to as pneumatophores.

Since the mangrove plants grow in swampy and water-logged surfaces like that of Sunderban region of West Bengal, they are unable to breathe.

The pneumatophores grow in the upward direction and enable the plants to breathe and thus they can survive in these areas.

For this reason, the pneumatophores are also referred to as breathing roots.
