Let the number of books be x.

Total amount = Rs. 48

Then the cost of each book is Rs. 48/x.

If 4 more books are bought in same amount, the cost of each books be Rs. 48/(x + 4).

Given that, the cost of each book from (x + 4) books will be Rs. 1 less than each book from x books.

Thus, 48/(x + 4) = 48/x - 1

or, 48/(x + 4) = (48 - x)/x

or, 48x = 48x - x² + 192 - 4x

or, x² + 4x - 192 = 0

or, (x + 16) (x - 12) = 0

Either x + 16 = 0 or, x - 12 = 0

This gives x = - 16, 12

Since x > 0, we take x = 12

Therefore the required number of books is 12.
