Let the cost of a pen be Rs x
And the cost of a pencil be Rs y
A/Q,
3y+x=10
=>x=10-3y------->(i)
and,
2y+3x=16
=>2y+3(10-3y)=16[from (i)
=>2y+30-9y=16
=>-7y=-14[both side divided by -]
=>y=2------->(ii)
put (ii) in (i)
(i)=>x=10-3y=10-6=4
Therefore,
cost of a pen=Rs 4
cost of a pencil=Rs 2
And the cost of a pencil be Rs y
A/Q,
3y+x=10
=>x=10-3y------->(i)
and,
2y+3x=16
=>2y+3(10-3y)=16[from (i)

cost of a pencil=Rs 2
