"Mohan asked me which class I read in.

Firstly, the quotes or inverted commas were taken out. In this statement, since Mohan is asking a question to the speaker so the reported verb, “said” will be replaced by “asked”. This happens because this is an interrogative statement.

In the direct speech, the second verb, “read” is in its simple present form. However, according to the rules of English grammar in the indirect speech, “read” will be in its simple past form. i.e. “read” which is pronounced as ‘red’.

As per rules the present tense od the direct speech changes to simple past in indirect speech. Hence, present tense of the “read” changes to simple past form “read” in the indirect speech. Lastly, the question mark was replaced with a full stop. This is how direct speech of the mentioned interrogative sentence is changed into indirect speech.
