• Indirect Speech gives the substance of the speaker's actual words and not the the exact words spoken by him or her is termed as Indirect Speech.

• Inverted commas are removed.

• The comma separating the reporting verb from the reported speech is removed.

• Reported Speech is introduced by a conjunction like – that, if, what, why, etc....

• Reporting Verb changes according to the sense.

• The Tense of the Reporting Verb is never changed.

• All kinds of sentences change into Assertive ones.

• The mark of interrogation (?) and the mark of exclamation (!) at the end of the sentence are changed into full stops.

• Words of direct speech will turn to indirect in the following way :

  • Now – then
  • Today – that day
  • Tonight – that night
  • Yesterday – the day before or the previous day
  • Thus – so
  • Ago – before or
  • Hence – thence
