Answer:

let mol fraction of NaOH =X

Explanation:

X=10/40

÷

10/40 + 100/18

X = 0.4/0.4 +5.56

X = 0.4/5.6

X = 0.07

Given:

Mass % of NaOH = 10%

To Find:

The mole fraction of the solvent.

Calculation:

- Let the mass of solution be 100 gm

⇒ The mass of NaOH, w = 10 % of 100 = 10 gm

& the mass of water = 100 - 10 = 90 gm

- No of moles of NaOH, n1 = 10/40 = 0.25

- No of moles of Water, n2 = 90/18 = 5

- Mole fraction of water = n2/(n1+n2)

⇒ X (water) = 5/5.25

X (water) = 0.9524 (approx.)

- So, the mole fraction of the solvent (water) is 0.9524.
