Assume that the amount of compound is 100 g

So carbon = 40g

H = 6.7 g

O = 53.5 g

Number of mole s= amount in g / molar mass

Mole of C= 40/12.01= 3.33 mole

H= 6.7 /1.008= 6.6

O = 53.6 /16= 3.3

The molar ratio

C= 3.33/3.33=1

O =3.33/3.33=1

H= 6.6/3.33=2

The empirical formula is CH2O
