Atomic number of carbon is 14 and its electronic distribution is 2, 8, 4. This means that one carbon atom has 4 valence electrons. And, in order to attain stability carbon needs to gain 4 more electrons.

And, atomic number of hydrogen is 1 and it contains only 1 electron in its shell. So, in order to attain stability it needs to gain one more electron.

Hence, when carbon atom chemically combines with a hydrogen atom then 4 hydrogen atoms need to combine with one carbon atom.

Therefore, the compound formed is CH_{4} and it is known as methane.
