Welcome dear,
● Answers -
(a) Compound P is ethanol (C2H5OH)
(b) (i) In absence of oxidizing agent, ethanol oxidises to ethanal.
C2H5OH + [O] ---> CH3CHO + H2O
(ii) In presence of oxidizing agent, ethanol oxidizes to ethanoic acid.
C2H5OH + 2[O] ---> CH3COOH + H2O
(c) (i) Ethanol reacts with ethanoic acid to give ethyl ethanoate (fruity odour).
C2H5OH + CH3COOH ---> C2H5COOCH3 + H2O
(ii) Reaction of ester with base is called saponification.
(d) Cleansing action of soap -
- Soap breaks up the oil into smaller drops, which can mix with the water.
- It works because soap is made up of molecules with two very different ends - hydrophilic and hydrophobic end.
- Hydrophobic ends of soap molecule attach to the oil.
- Hydrophilic ends stick out into the water.
- This forms micelles which are easily removed with water.
Hope this helps you...
