MOLECULES IN SOLIDS:
- Molecules in solids are tightly packed.
- Molecules in a solid maintain both their own volume.
- The molecular arrangement in solids are highly organised, tightly-packed pattern will small spaces and molecular motion reduced to vibration in place.
- Solids are generally held together by ionic or strong covalent bonding, and the attractive forces between the atoms, ions, or molecules in a solid are very strong.
- Common example for solids is glass and plastics.
CATEGORIES OF SOLIDS:
- Crystalline solids
- Amorphous solids
CRYSTALLINE SOLIDS:
- The are those in which the atoms, ions, or molecules that makes up the solid exists in a regular, well-defined arrangement.
- The smallest repeating patterns of crystalline solids is known as unit cell.
AMORPHOUS SOLIDS:
- They do not have much order in structures. Though their molecules are close together and have a little freedom to move.
- They are not arranged in a regular order as are those in crystalline solids.
