SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

The whole cake is taken as 1

It is given that 5/12 parts of the cake were eaten by both Molly and Varun.

Portion of cake eaten = 5/12 + 5/12 = 10/12

= 5/6 parts

So portion of cake left = 1-5/6

Taking LCM of 6 and 1

$= \frac{6 - 5}{6}$

= 1/6

Hence, The portion of cake left is 1/6 parts.
