Molten aluminium was poured in a sand mould and the thickness of the solid skin formed after 20 seconds and 50 seconds were found to be 3 mm and 4.5 mm respectively. What would be the thickness of the solid skin at the end of 100 seconds after pouring?

Answer: 7 mm

Explanation:

Since, the change in the thickness must be constant,

Thus, we can take the linear function that shows the given situation,

Let the function that shows the thickness of the solid skin after x seconds,

f(x) = A x + B

Since, For x = 20 seconds, f(x) = 3 mm

3 = 20 A + B  ----------(1)

Also, For x = 50 seconds, f(x) = 4.5 mm

4.5 = 50 A + B -----------(2)

By solving equation (1) and (2),

We get,

B = 2  and A = 0.05

Hence, the function that shows the given situation,

f(x) = 0.05 x + 2

For x = 100 seconds

f(100) = 0.05 × 100 + 2 = 5 + 2 = 7 mm
