Answer:

Indeed, the Mona Lisa is a very realistic portrait. The subject's softly sculptural face shows Leonardo's skillful handling of sfumato, an artistic technique that uses subtle gradations of light and shadow to model form, and shows his understanding of the skull beneath the skin.

Answer:

The Mona Lisa, also called Portrait of Lisa Gherardini, is a half-length portrait oil painting on a poplar wood by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci.

It had been believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506; however, Leonardo may have continued working on it as late as 1517. Leonardo da Vinci never completed the portrait though. When he died in 1519, it was one of many unfinished works left to his assistant.

It was acquired by King Francis I of France and is now the property of the French Republic itself, on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris since 1797.
