Money is external means that not all the things can be bought by money like happiness , peace , memories etc... The boy in the poem lost the ball and with a dime it can be replaced with a new one. But the new one cannot give the boy the same childhood memories associated with the lost ball as it is lost with the ball. The new ball can only give new memories not the past ones so the money is not useful over that time. The boy feel his first responsibilty that not everything is always be with them some dear ones and near ones can die and we have to overcome that grief without giving up is the main thing we can do in the world full of possesions and for the epistomolgy of loss.
