Important Points:

  • Reaction starts by formation of most stable carbocation.
  • Tertiary Carbocation is the most stable carbocation followed by Secondary and Primary Carbocation.
  • Since Mono-chlorination takes place we use HCl to add only 1 chlorine to the reactant.
  • If Di-Chlorination had taken place then we would have used Cl₂ molecule and proceeded the reaction via Free Radical Mechanism.
  • Formation of Carbocation is done by breaking of the double bond.
