Explanation:

Given Monochromatic light of wavelength 6600 A incident normally on grating. If the second order spectrum produced at an angle 18° 14' from the normal. Find the length (wide in cm) of the grating if the total number of lines on the grating is 9541

  • For dark position
  •         a sin theta = Nλ
  • Since it is the 2nd order we have
  •           a sin theta = 2λ
  •           So λ = 6600 nm
  •             theta = 18 deg 14’
  •      Substituting we get
  •             a sin18 deg 14’ = 2(6600)
  •               a x 0.3129 = 13,200
  •              Or a = 42.186 x 10^-6 m
  •     Now d/N = 42.186 x 10^-6
  •                 d / 9541 = 42.186 x 10^-6
  •          Or d = 4 cm
