MONOCOTYLEDON:

mono = one
cotyledon=they are the part of embryo or the seed which give rise to first leaves

BEFORE KNOWING  WHAT IS MONOCOTYLEDON LET US KNOW THE STRUCTURE OF SEED AND WHAT A COTYLEDON REALLY IS:
seed usually consists of a seed coat and embryo which usually consists of  cotyledons"(actually stores much nutrients) a hypocotyl which gives rise to the upper parts of the plant which are situated above ground level and radicle which gives root

so by above structure classification by now you shoud understand what is a cotyledon first
so here in some plants the seed only consists of one cotyledon hence called mono cotyledon

examples:
palm trees
grasses
our favourite mango etc.....
