Monsoon is a gamble for farmers:

a. Agriculture constitutes the basic economic activity for our population, around two/thirds of our population is dependent on agriculture for their livelihood.

b. Around 60% of farmers are dependent on monsoon rains to meet their irrigation requirements.

c. Farmers either gain from timely monsoon showers or they become victims of its uncertainty.

d. Drought in some areas, floods in some effects the farmers and their produce on a large scale.

e. One can give example of severe droughts in 2002 that largely impacted India's economic growth to less than 4%, whereas A bountiful monsoon, accounted for 8.1 percent growth in the year to March, 2005.

f. Weak monsoon certainly impacts the rural households leading to crop failures and even to farmers suicide.

h. Timely monsoon are vital for farm output in the world's second-biggest producer of rice, wheat, sugar and cotton
