Months before Uttarayan, homes in localities of various cities in Gujarat turn into kite-
producingfactories with all the family members helping in this seasonal activity. The paper and
sticks are cut, glue is stirred and thousands of kites are ready. The string is coated with a special
glass powder and rice paste all set to cut others strings and knock down. The size of kites
ranges from 9" to 3'.
The night before Uttarayan is electric with brisk business in buying and selling kites in
amazingly numerous bulk purchases. The Patang Bazaar situated in the heart of Ahmedabad is
open 24 hrs. during the whole week. A visit to the bazaar in the middle of the night proves that
this city is obsessed with kites.
The nights see the arrival of illuminated box kites often in a series strung on one line,
known as "tukkals". They add a touch of splendour to the sky. The day is also marked with
traditional food like undhiyo, jalebi, tilladdu and chikki.
