A new moon is when the moon is the opposite side of the earth rather than where we are. So the moon is not visible.

A new moon occurs when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth. The far side of the Moon is in full sunlight and the near side of the Moon receives no sunlight. The new moon is also in the daytime sky. Sunlight illuminates the atmosphere so much that the dark face of the new moon can't be seen.
