The play, "The Dear Departed" by William Stanley Houghton, focuses on the degrading moral values in the middle-class families. It also deals with the thinking of the family members who have become materialistic. The two sisters didn't feel any loss after the death of their father. Rather they were much worried about the division of the property and things. The author gives the instance of the family relations which have become so corrupt that they are based on the material things than the emotional. It is only at the end of the story that the grandfather decided to marry Mrs. Shorrocks and give all his property to her.

The moral of the story is that the relations should not be based on the terms of material things. Relations should be pure and full of affection. Also, the story deals with the theme that the end of greed leads to no profit.
