In this poem, the dying soldier is smiling even though he's dying but he is still smiling to hide his wound. The soldier describes his experience with the narrator. That traumatizes the narrator so much that he dies with the small pain in his chest. The poem explains the side effects of the war and how people who are involved in the war actually feel which is not a happy feeling for the soldiers as well as the nation.

'Small Pain in My Chest'
is Michael Mack’s an anti-war poem. As we go through it we feel pity towards
the sad plight of the people participating in the war.
It shows the ill-effects and evils of war. It brings forth the destructive power of war. It indicates that war can never bring happiness, it always has a sad end. The poem depicts the futility and uselessness of war.
