Reason for East India Company worried about Russia:

The East India Company was concerned about Russia throughout the late 1830s because it felt it could spread through Asia and reach India through the northwest.

And motivated by this concern they wanted to maintain their influence on the subcontinent's northwestern frontiers.

To do so, they waged the preceding wars:

A protracted war with Afghanistan between 1838 and 1842 to create there an unofficial law of the corporation.

A war with others and seized control of the area of Sindh in 1843 .

A full-scale war with Punjab (Sikh Kingdom) following the collapse of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839; Punjab was eventually taken over in 1849.
