Chromosomes were first seen by Hofmeister (1848) in the pollen mother cells of Tradescantia in the form of darkly stained bodies. The term chromosome (Gr: chrom=colour; soma=body) was used by Waldeyer (1888) to designate their great affinity to basic dyes.

Chromosome Morphology. Chromosomes are thread like structures, which can be easily observed and counting during metaphase stages of mitosis. Each chromosome has a point of attachment to the mitotic spindle, called the centromere. The position of centromere determines the shape of the chromosome.
