Intestinal obstruction occurs most commonly in the third trimester. Volvulus occurs in approximately 25% of cases. Less common causes of bowel obstruction include intussusception, hernia, and neoplasm. The signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction are the same as in the nonpregnant patient.
