Many integers can be expressed as the sum of two consecutive integers.

  • When two integers are consecutive one of them is odd and the other is even.
  • An even number is defined as the number whose units digit ends with 0,2,4,6, and 8.
  • An odd number is defined as the number which is not divisible by 2 and their units digit end with 1, 3, 5,7, and 9.
  • The sum of an odd number and an even number is always an odd number.
  • When two consecutive numbers are added i.e an odd number and an even number are added, hence the sum would be an odd number.
  • Hence even numbers cannot be written as the sum of two consecutive numbers.
  • An odd number can be expressed as the sum of two consecutive numbers such as,

=> 3 = 1+2, 5 = 2+3, 7 = 3+4 and so on.

  • Hence, any odd number can be expressed as the sum of two consecutive numbers.
  • 5001 can be expressed as 2500+2501, 5003 = 2501+2502. Hence all the odd numbers except 1 can be expressed as the sum of two consecutive numbers.

Therefore, all the odd numbers except 1, can be expressed as the sum of two consecutive numbers.
