Though most of the Earth is covered with water, it is far to saline to be fit for consumption for us humans. Salty water in oceans, seas etc. constitute 97% of the total water on Earth.
Of the remaining 3%, 2% is locked away in ice caps and glaciers. The last 1% is what all humans have to make ends meet. The increase of population resulted in a high demand in water, and the unequal distribution of this water also contributed to the scarcity of water.

Because Earth has 71% water but only 2.5% is usable in which 70% is glaciers and iceburgs and 30% river ,lakes etc . And we use these 30% water bodies and these gets polluted .
