Revolt of 1857 began at Meerut, as sepoy mutiny. Later on spread to upper Gangetic valley and central India. Rulers like Mughal ruler Bahadur Shah Zafar, Nana Sahib, Rani Lakshmi bai, Bakht Khan, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Kunwar Singh took lead.
- As the revolt of 1857 was erupted in Northen part of Indian subcontinent and its centres were also restricted around Delhi. hence, mainly north Indian rulers took part in it.
- Also many of the rulers were loyal to britishers . Hence , limited participation.
- South Indian rulers were not interested in the revolt as earlier revolts were suppressed such as revolt of Vizinagaram etc.
- Also few of the rulers , even from north India , helped British army to regain its lost ground and suppressing the revolt.
