Most of the land in the Arctic has a polar
tundra climate. It has permafrost, which is
a layer of frozen earth about 450 metres
deep. The deepest parts of the ground stay
frozen, even in the summer. In the southern
parts of the Arctic, the surface above
the permafrost melts in the summer and
creates bogs and shallow lakes.
