lunar maria is large, dark, basaltic plains on Earth's Moon, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. They were dubbed maria, Latin for "seas", by early astronomers who mistook them for actual seas.

This part is least hit by comets and other space debris. Of course astroids couldn't have hit moon as no craters in moon are that big.
