Preservatives used in food can be natural as well as synthetic. They are used to preserve food for a longer period of time by enhancing their shelf life and kill microbes.
FDA has proved a lot of synthetic preservatives which are healthy if taken in small amounts. For example sodium nitrate, sodium benzoate and propionate have been used in food preservation industry for a very long time.
