Most of us would remember „ek chidiya anek chidiya …..‟ the childhood anthem for

many growing up in the Doordarshan age. Sadly, however, the „anek chidiya‟ is a thing of

past, and even the most common of birds – the sparrow – is now endangered. As the world

celebrates Sparrow Day, today, we take a closer look on the shrinking world of sparrows.

“When I was a child, a lot of sparrows would come on our terrace, and feed on some

kitchen garden plants and worms. Each day, after returning from school, I would playfully

scare them (I loved the sight of so many birds flying together) and they would fly away. In

minutes, though, they‟d be back,” recounts Sanjana Bose. The bird enthusiast adds, “I

wonder whether my daughter will ever relate to such experiences.”

Sanjana is perhaps right. The population of the common house sparrow has declined

considerably. In some states of the country the percentage has dropped by a sharp 80%.
