Once I was given the project of interviewing inmates living at an old age home. The interview brought tears in my eyes. Here is the interview:

I: Good afternoon! May I ask you some questions?

Inmate: Sure son!

I: When and hy did you decide to live at this Old Age Home?

Inmate: (Sadly) I did not want to live here; but when my son told me categorically he could not keep me in his home, I had no other option but to stay here!

I: Do you miss your family?

Inmate: (Tears welling up in her eyes) I miss my home and family very badly. I had a close bond with my grandchildren. I used to play with… them…(Wiping her tears) I have not seen them for a long time!

I: Does your son ever come here to see you?

Inmate: Very rarely! When I miss them very much; I call him; sometimes he responds and sometimes he does not.

I: Would you mind if I visit you every weekend?

Inmate: (Smilingly) I would love it!

I: Thanks for answering my questions. You are very strong auntie ji!

During a visit to an old age home, I met a person aged 82, a retired High Court Judge. Earlier, he said he was so influential, well off. He had three children. He told he gave them the best education and other facilities, now they are also well settled in their lives.

With the demise of his wife, he was left alone and the children did not want to take care of him. He told that pained him a lot and later after a tough decision, he went and joined the old age home.

When I asked for his advice to present youngsters, all he could say was “don't leave your grandparents here (old age home)”. That advice really blew me up because if each and every one of us takes care of very own people, then all these old age homes will be a thing of the past.
