The answer is 11/12 kg

GIVEN

Mother bought 3⅙ kg of sugar. She used 2¼ kg while baking cookies.

TO FIND

How much sugar did she have left?

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

It is given,

Amount of sugar mother has = 3⅙ kg

Amount of sugar used for baking cookies = 2¼ kg

So,

The amount of sugar remained = Total amount of sugar - amount of sugar used for baking.

Now,

We can observe that the given fractions are in mixed Fractions

We will first convert the mixed fractions into improper fraction and carry out the subtraction.

Therefore,

3 \frac{1}{6}  =  \frac{6 \times 3 + 1}{6}  =  \frac{19}{6} kg

Similarly,

2 \frac{1}{4}  =  \frac{4 \times 2 + 1}{4}  =  \frac{9}{4} kg

We can observe that the fractions are unlike fractions, We will equalise the denominator of the fractions;

 \frac{19}{6}  -  \frac{9}{4}

LCM of 6 and 4 is 12

Therefore,

 \frac{38 - 27}{12}

=

 =  \frac{11}{12} kg

Hence, The answer is 11/12 kg
