Let present age of her son be 'x' years

mother's age is 12 years more than twice her son's age

and her mother's present age = 2x + 12

After 8 years,
son's age = x + 8
mother's age = 2x + 12 + 8 = 2x + 20

mother's age will be 20 years less than three times her son's age.

2x + 20 = 3(x + 8) - 20
2x + 20 + 20 = 3x + 24
2x + 40 = 3x + 24
3x - 2x = 40 - 24
x = 16

Son's present age = 16 years
his mother's present age = 2(16) + 12
= 32 + 12
= 44 years
