Firstly, that a child be loved and and emotionally bonded to a devoted caregiver is essentially for that child’s emotional, mental, and intellectual development. This is not sentimentality, this has been demonstrated by numerous studies. A person who does not have a loving bond with a caregiver as a child grows into a stunted adult, on many levels, one who not only has a lesser ability to bond with their own child, but also often finds themselves unable to form lasting romantic attachments, or to bounce back from set backs of any kind. This lack of attachment actually affects the developing brain.
The good news is this bond does not have to be with the child’s mother, mother’s may be dead, physically absent, or emotionally ill and there is still hope for the child’s future as long as they form that deep emotional attachment to some other human being.
