Each individual has a different set of motives, but the most common one, according to me is the need for recognition. I have two reasons to support my belief.
To begin with, the need for recognition is a motive that can be seen from the early childhood days itself, when a child tries its best to gain attention. This attention is nothing but the child's way of seeking recognition and acknowledgement. Even through teenage years, each child enjoys the attention he/she gets. As the child grows older, clearer goals are set. Success is then defined in terms of recognition, which may also be called popularity or fame.
Additionally, other desirables automatically come with recognition. For example, if one is famous, one gains a fan base, and has some sort of sway over his/her fans. Thus, recognition brings power. Recognition is also related to the ability to reach out to others. So, public appeal is also covered. This in turn can bring financial success, which is another common motive.
Looking at the two abovementioned reasons, I feel that humans crave for recognition and that drives them.
