Motor riders Vladimir and Varya started their rides from two points that are 160 miles apart. Laika, Vladimir's pet parrot started chasing Vladimir's motorcycle and overtakes him and meets Varya. Then Laika flew back towards Vladimir. The parrot then started flying back and forth between the two riders. The parrot flew at the speed of 25 mph, while Vladimir and Varya's speed was 20 mph. What was the total distance that Laika flew in miles?

Answer:

Vladimir and Varya distance = 160miles

which is is the uniform distance as both are traveling at the same speed @ 20mph

(Note: this question is same as the problem from linear equation where a boat sails upstream and downstream except that, this time the bird and the rider moving on the same direction is = sailing upstream and opposite direction is = sailing downstream)

time taken by the bird to reach varya,

speedxt= 160

(v-u)t= 160

t=160/25mph-20mph = 160 miles/5miles/

h = 32h

Time taken by the bird to reach Vladimir,

(v+u) xt= 160

t= 160miles / 25mph+20mph

= 160miles/45mph = 32h/9

D= sx t(Vladimir to varya) + sxt ( Varya to Vladimir)

= 25mp 32h + 25mp 32h/9

= 25 miles ( 32+32/9)

= 25 miles x (288+32)/9 =

= 25 milesx 320/9

= 8000 miles/ 9

= 888.88 miles

= 888.9 miles
