- Mountaineers use alcohol thermometers because in mountain regions the temperature is extremely cold. The alcohol thermometer is chosen for a very cold region because the freezing point of alcohol is - 117°C and it can be used for measuring the temperature of the very cold region without getting frozen and it gives a relative exact temperature.
- There are other advantages of using Alcohol in a thermometer: The alcohol thermometer is transparent and thus, it has to be coloured before it is used, it has a low specific heat capacity so it expands more than mercury which is about six times for the same rise in temperature.
