Mountains draw people towards achieving seemingly impossible feats, the quest if often solitary with the human being pitted against nature and no one to help but himself, which makes it similar to the larger quest of life where one must fight his own battles

-Man realizes that he is just a speck in the universe which is a humbling realization, it is a spiritual quest to exceed one's supposed limitations and prove that the only obstacle in a person's path is his own fears and anxieties.
