Movement is considered as an important criterion for being alive. But, a plant that is not visibly growing and some animals that breathe without visible movements are still alive.

(i) Why are visible movements, alone as a criterion, not considered sufficient for being alive?

(ii) On the basis of molecular movements, explain whether viruses are alive or dead.

(i)

Any visible movement such as walking, breathing, or growing is generally used to decide whether something is alive or not. However, a living organism can also have movements, which are not visible to the naked eye.  Therefore, the presence of life processes is a fundamental criterion that can be used to decide whether something is alive or not.

Evidence which can ensure something is alive or not

Shape and Dimension

Reproduction

Growth

Cellular structure

Metabolism

Movements

Self-regulations

Variation

Coordination

Definite life cycle

Death

Example – Movements are fast in most animals, but motions in plants are generally slow.

(ii)

Virus are micro scopic organisms that are both alive or dead. This is because when these organisms are out of a living body i.e. the host it does perform any of its regular functions such as reproduction. But, when it enters the body of the host it does its regular process. This is why viruses are alive or dead.
