According to the Berkeley Media Studies Group, only 1% of media representations of young people are positive. For 25 years, Peace First has been dedicated to helping young people become peacemakers through in-class curriculum and project-based work. This month, iiD helped the nonprofit create greater social impact by launching the Peace First Challenge, an inspiring community and crowdsourcing platform to empower young people worldwide to launch their own peace movements and develop their skills as social activists.

Design Sprint for Social Impact

To understand the attitudes of teen users around the concept of peacemaking, iiD facilitated a design sprint with young people and the Peace First team. With 13 Boston area youth (age 12 to 14), we engaged in brainstorming, group discussion and collaborative drawing to inform our design. It further helped confirm that teens were interested and able to identify key issues of social injustice and were keen on finding solutions to solve them. We understood this would lead to the creation of their own projects and had a clear direction to move onto prototyping and testing.

Prototyping and User Testing

During this phase the user experience was fully planned out. A sitemap, prototype, user tests and detailed wireframes were created to ensure ease-of-use and user-centered design. Vital to testing the team’s assumptions was creating the interactive prototype and testing with real users. We planned and implemented user tests both remotely and in-person, capturing user interactions and interviews on video. Finally, we analyzed the test videos with the Peace First team to make decisions on areas that could be improved in final wireframes. A key metric of the user test was a significantly high Net Promoter Score, which indicated a clear liking of both the prototype and the peacemaking platform as a whole.

Branding and UI Design

We started by exploring three creative directions based on our findings from the design sprint and prototyping phases. More than just a user interface, we created a brand experience that would attract and retain users, while still being in sync with the main Peace First brand. The chosen direction was a highly visual approach that combined bold type, large format photos and videos and vivid color coding for different sections of the site. Since the site was designed for teens, the responsive design and mobile functionality was even more important than the desktop.

“In a time when young people spend a lot of time communicating through digital platforms, we find that it is really important to engage with them in ways that make more sense to them. Inviting them to participate in conversations with other young people and helping them navigate their peacemaking journey and come up with solutions to injustices in an online collaboration platform seems like the perfect way to do this. We are excited to have gone live this fall with the support of iiD as our design and technology partner.”
