Formation of Ammonia :

Nitrogen electronic configuration is , 1s² 2s² 2p³ . Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons . It still needs 3 more electrons to attain octet (stable electronic configuration).

Coming to Hydrogen. Electronic configuration of hydrogen is 1s¹ . It has one valence electron. It tries to gain one more electron to attain stable electronic configuration i.e , duplet electronic configuration. Duplet electronic configuration is also a stable configuration. Now , Three hydrogen atoms and one nitrogen atom share their electrons in such a way that three of them attain stable electronic configuration.

By observing the lewis dot structure (in attachment) we can say that three pairs of electrons are shared between Nitrogen and Hydrogen.

Hence , The total number of electrons shared between Hydrogen and Nitrogen during the formation of ammonia are 6 electrons (or) 3 pairs of electrons.
