Let the cost of apple be x.

And, the cost of potato be y.

Then,

2x + 2y = 42 \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: 4x + 2y = 60 \\ \\ \\ x = \frac{42 - 2y}{2} = \frac{2(21 - y)}{2} = 21 - y \\ \\ \\ Now, \\ \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \:Putting \: value \: of \: x \: in \: 2nd \: equation \\ \\ 4(21 - y) + 2y = 60 \\ 84 - 4y + 2y = 60 \\ 84 - 2y = 60 \\ 84 - 60 = 2y \\ 24 = 2y \\ y = 12 \\ \\ Therefore \\ \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: x = 21 - y \\ \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \:x = 21 - 12 \\ \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \: \:x = 9

Hence, The cost of 1 kg of apple is ₹ 9.
