Mr. Childress' neighbor lost his house keys. The only unlocked window in his neighbor's house is on the second story. The neighbor is afraid of heights, and so Mr. Childress is valiantly climbing a ladder in hopes of reaching the unlocked second story window. He has a twelve foot ladder that he places 4 four feet away from the side of his neighbor's house. The window is ten feet from the ground. Can Mr. Childress reach the window?

So, assume |σ(k)−σ(k+1)|=i,|σ(k)−σ(k+1)|=i, in how many ways can you do this? Well you have 22 options to choose the sign(which one is bigger) and then you can place the smallest one at 1,1, the biggest one at i+1i+1 and take them to the right until the biggest one hits N.N. So, you have 2(N−i)2(N−i) ways to do this. Also, you really do not care about what happens on the other houses, so you just pick a random permutation for the N−2N−2 choices. You can pick this permutation in (N−2)!(N−2)! ways.
