Mr. Fernandez is the owner of ‘Unitech Enterprises’ carrying on the
business of manufacturing electrical appliances. There was a lot of discontentment in the organization and the targets were not being met.
He asked his son, Michael, who had recently completed his MBA, to find out the reason.
Michael found out that all decision making of the enterprise was in the hands of his father. His father did not believe in his employees. As a result both the employer and employees were not able to understand each other’s message in the same sense. Thus, the employees were not happy and the targets were not met.
a) Identify and explain the type of leadership style being adopted by Mr. Fernandez
b) Explain the other two styles of leadership.

(a) Two communication barriers are: (i) Personal barrier/Lack of confidence of superior on his subordinates. (ii) Organisational barrier/Organisational facilities. (b) Personal barrier: (i) Fear of challenge to authority may make the superior withhold communication. (ii) Unwillingness to communicate on the part of the subordinates may arise if they perceive that the communication may adversely affect their interests. (iii) Lack of proper incentives may hinder the initiative of the subordinates to communicate. Organisational barrier: (i) Organisational policy may not be supportive to free flow communication. (ii) Rigid Rules and regulations may delay communication. (iii) Status of the superior may not allow his subordinates to express their feelings freely. (iv) Complexity in organization structure leads to delayed and distorted communication.

a) Mr. Fernandez adopted Autocratic leadership style. In this type of leadership style the leader is supposed to take all decisions by himself and all the team members are supposed to do work according to the instructions or orders given by the leader.

b) The other two leadership styles are :

  • Democratic : In this leadership style the team members or employees are given full opportunity in the decision making process.
  • Laissez-faire: In this leadership style some decisions are made by the leader and some are handed over to employees.
