There are two types of speeches ↴

(1) Direct speech or Direct narration

(2) Indirect speech or Indirect narration

  \underline \bold {(1) Direct speech:-}

What a man says is kept as it is within a quotation (" ") marks. A sentence containing such a quote is called the DIRECT SPEECH or DIRECT NARRATION.

 The direct speech is always enclosed with inverted commas (" ")

 There is no change in words.

  • Example :  Minu said, "Rabi wrote a poem."

  \underline \bold {(2) Indirect speech:-}

Sometimes the exact speech of a speaker is not repeated but reported. Such a speech is called INDIRECT SPEECH or INDIRECT NARRATION.

 We change a sentence in indirect speech without using first person's actual words.

 This is also known as reported speech.

 We change it into the past tense.

  • Example : Minu said that Rabi had written a poem.

When Direct Speech is in the past tenses ↴

Past Simple becomes Past Perfect

  • Direct : “I ate too much last night,” he said
  • Indirect : He said that he had eaten too much last night.

Past Continuous becomes Past Perfect Continuous

  • Direct : “I was lying in the hammock,” said Frances
  • Indirect : Frances said that she had been lying in the hammock.

Past Perfect does not change tense

  • Direct : “Amy had fallen asleep before we got home,” said Kim.
  • Indirect : Kim said that Amy had fallen asleep before they got home.

Past Perfect Continuous does not change tense

  • Direct : “We had been staying in Paris all summer, said Mathew.
  • Indirect : Mathew said that they had been staying in Paris all summer.
